This original series of five short films (created exclusively for release on the Internet), showed that the Internet had arrived in terms of being a "mass" market; that Online communities could virally market a campaign all on their own; and, that the medium could attract top agency and acting talent and engender breakthrough brand advertising campaigns. So why aren't films up anymore? You can actually find out more info about the films at this site: http://www.usautoparts.net/bmw/media/films/bmwfilms.htm

In 2000, Volkswagen of America used national broadcast and print to drive potential customers to its Website, where it offered New VW Beetles in two limited edition colors, available exclusively Online. The promotion generated over 2,500 Online-based car sales (approximately $10 million dollars in total), 60% of which were for Vapor Blue – one of the custom colors. Fast forward to 2007, and today's VW Online presence has substantially increased...

These cross-media optimization studies, first launched in February 2002, sought to discover if adding Online advertising to the mix, could influence brand metrics such as brand association, brand favourability, purchase intent, etc.(since that's the way all other media is measured) -- and if it does -- how much of a marketer's mix should be allocated to each media to optimize ad spend. IAB Canada followed suit by launching the studies in Canada, and has since completed 7.

This was a fun one to recall. Office Depot placed Y2K information centers in all 750+ Office Depot superstores throughout the U.S. in order to try to recoup failing sales. The Y2K Information Center had free brochures explaining the potential problems associated with the "Y2K Bug" and offered tips to help customers prepare their homes and offices. Seems to have worked, as the years following began a slow and steady climb upward.

You'll note that the computer in this image is y2k compliant :-)

Ok, it's the one day we'd all like to forget... when, on Friday 14th April, 2000, Wall Street racked up its biggest, historical, one-day stock market plunge. The crash ended a week where high-tech stocks lost $2 trillion in value. Worst hit was the U.S. Nasdaq, and Bill Gates, who personally lost $30 billion in just a few hours.

Set up in 1985, then purchased by Salon.com in 1999, and as this article says, was due to be sold in 2005. I note, however, that it is still part of the community area on Salon.com to this day... Hmmm.

Good exapmle of the discussions going on when the medium was in its infancy (and still today, I might add). The good news is, 10 years later there's lots of proof the Web does work.
Everytime I ride my bike by the former office of the Odd Job Jack TV show (Bathurst + College in Toronto), I'm reminded that Molson Canadian once upon a time branded the content on both television and Internet platforms. Starring Don McKellar, Odd Job Jack was one of Canada's first TV series developed for the Web from concept to implementation. The site is still up, and I see Coors Light is in there. Would love to know how things are going with this initiative...

I remember doing this at the myjones.com Website in 1999. I uploaded a picture of my best friend (in colour!) and plastered it onto a lemon flavoured drink, and gave her the best birthday present she's ever had (or so she says).

The Website's been updated of course, but this was SO far ahead of its time in terms of using technology that could work despite the low speed of the Internet connections at that time that it deserves to be in the Website development hall of fame! And of course it goes without saying that it embraced the "consumer in control" concept WAY before its time as well.

Fully-immersive game that blurred the lines between real life and advertising forever, and used every type of media, both on- and offline to engage users in a tough category, AND drive huge increases in lead generation and test drives -- and we presume, sales -- all for a fraction of what the competition spent on regular brand advertising.

The inspiration for the interface for this site as well...

The Lofters (also known as U8TV),was a Canadian reality television series which aired on the Life Network and Online through U8TV.com. Eight young Canadians were tasked with not only moving in together in a downtown Toronto loft, but also producing and hosting television programs for Life Network, other Canadian specialty channels at the same time. Was cancelled in 2002 (even the URL is gone), but some great firsts in the Canadian market.
